How to use the Tangier airport bus

I recently returned from travelling through North Africa and Western Europe. It was an amazing trip that will be the subject of several blog posts – starting with this one!

I chose this rather niche topic to start because it is hard to find reliable information online. Many of these posts will be similar to hopefully help some people plan their trips.

Background

Tangier is a city on the northern coast of Morocco. It has a relatively small airport that carries both domestic and international traffic.

Unlike some other smaller airports it is located quite a fair way out of the city centre. As a visitor you’ll need to use one of the following transport options:

  • Car
  • Taxi (only one type)
  • Bus

Driving a car yourself is not recommended, especially if you’re not familiar with Morocco. I might cover this topic in a future post.

You can use a taxi if you wish. These are strictly regulated in Tangier. You can only use the ‘Grand Taxis’ (essentially shared taxis) and there is a fixed price.

The final option is the bus. There are private operators but the information in this post only relates to the public bus service.

This has only been introduced recently. From what I can find the public bus to the airport started operating in 2024.

The bus operator has a webpage for this service. Unfortunately it is incorrect.

When I was in Tangier I checked this webpage and its promise that buses ran every 10 minutes seemed too good to be true. So the day before my flight I walked over to the terminus bus stop at the railway station and asked one of the bus drivers. He confirmed the following information:

  • The bus route display is ‘AE’.
  • Services operate every hour in each direction. From Tangier Railway Station, it is a clockface timetable with buses departing on the half hour (i.e. 0930, 1030, 1130, etc.)
  • According to Robert in this comment, from Tangier Airport the buses depart at 45 minutes past the hour (i.e. 0945, 1045, 1145, etc.)
  • The fare is MAD40 per person.
  • The first bus that leaves Tangier Railway Station (the terminus) is at 6:30am and the last bus is at 12:30am. This is on weekdays, I’m unsure of the timetable on weekends or public holidays.
  • You can pay either in cash or with your credit / debit card when you board the bus. There is no facility (or need) to buy tickets in advance.

he next day I caught the bus successfully using this information. The bus stop is located on the main road outside the main entrance to the railway station, just past the permanently-stationed crowd of taxi drivers who will try to entice you to go with them instead. It is listed as ‘Gare Ferrovaire‘ (stop ID 770150).

The bus was new, clean and comfortable. There were only a few other people on board, some of whom alighted before the airport.

There are several stops along the way if you are not staying near the main railway station. The full route is here on OpenStreetMap with all the stop locations.

I hope that this helps with trip planning. Please note that this information is correct as of May 2025 and may change in the future.

  1. The first bus is at XXXXXX and last bus is at DDDDDD? About as informative as the bus website! Seriously though, sounds like a fascinating destination.

Thanks for pointing that out, I definitely missed that! I’ve fixed it now.

  2. Thank you so much for the information.
One question in my mind: I will land in Tangier. Where exactly do I find the bus station at the airport? I have to go from the airport to the train station to get a train to Marrakech.
And is there a possibility to get somewhere a sim card on the way? Many many thanks in advance.

    1. The bus station is right next to the airports entrance door

A very helpful post ! Thank you

  4. I have visited Tangier several.times over the years and always felt ripped off by the price of the taxi service from to the airport (compared to all other prices in Morocco) I stumbled across the airport bus by accident as you rightly say Philip it is not advertised anywhere and mainly used by locals! This post is really helpful about times and stops and the driver I had was really helpful in telling me which stop was near to my hotel. A good service and value for money

Hi just to add a bit of information, when I was coming from the airport into Tangier the bus left at 45 minutes past the hour. Hope this is useful.

      That’s very useful, thank you!

  6. I took this bus yesterday evening. If you exit the airport and walk right towards the taxis, you will find the bus stop. It is like a thin blue post with the names of the stops on them. My bus departed at 19.28 so I assume it departs on the half hour and the hour. It was a rapid service and well worth the 40 MAD. I took a photo of the bus stop with all the names of the stops if that is of interest. Also, UK mobile phone networks do not tend to cover Morocco with their UK contract so if people wish to purchase a SIM, there are three stands at the airport where you can do this. I got a Maroc Telecom SIM for 100 MAD which included 20GB of data.
